Too many attorneys to even think about tort reform!

Could it be that the answer to the health care crisis is just that there are too many attorneys in congress? Think about it. The percentage of congressman and senators combined who list “attorney” as their profession is somewhere around 47%. Could it be that this is why we have never seen tort reform? Why is it we never hear of tort reform anymore? How would our health care system fare with a few less lawsuits? Hmm, maybe doctors could actually earn some money instead of needing insurance against litigation. Would an attorney vote against his own profession? I am not saying that some wouldn’t. It just seems that as a whole it would not make a lot of sense to vote for legislation that would limit your profitability if you ever leave office. Is it just that simple? We have allowed one profession to monopolize our government. Maybe if we had more ordinary business men/woman and people from all walks of life, maybe some doctors too? things would get done! When the next election cycle hits maybe we should keep our eyes open for some intelligent(yes believe it or not there are intelligent persons out there who are not lawyers) hard working individuals to send to DC. I mean just look at all the Harvard law types we have sent to Washington-and the problems have only gotten worse. Let’s diversify the next Congress!

  1. Excellent point. Legal fees, malpractice insurance, and resulting safegaurd tests, i.e. tests and drugs that are ordered by doctors for the express purpose of providing a legal safety blanket, are at heart of the high costs of ‘health care’ that the Hussein Administration keeps talking about. Tort reform, along the lines of the British system, would help immensely. However, its not likely.
The largest lobbying group in terms of dollars given to congress critters is the trial lawyers. That’s right, they’re bigger than ‘Big Oil’, ‘Big Pharmaceutical’, and ‘Big Auto’. Why then do we never hear any references to ‘Big Lawyer’?
Also, you mention that the percentage of lawyers is ~%47 in congress, I seem to remember numbers in the 90% range for Democrats. We have government of the lawyers, by the lawyers, for the lawyers.
